Govee LED Strip Lights – Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy
A comprehensive guide of Govee LED Strip Lights

Trying to customize your property, whether it be your room, a vehicle, or equipment, can be challenging without the right accessories. Fortunately, this is where LED strip lights come in. LEDs are an easy way to enhance the ambiance of a room, or accentuate your favorite devices.
Below, we’ll show you the specs of the Govee LED Strip light, one of the best of its class on the market today. We’ll also detail all the ins and outs of LEDs and teach you what to look for when purchasing LED Strip lights. Read on to discover everything you need to know before you make a decision.
What Are Govee LED Strips?
Govee LED Strip lights are multiple multicolor LED lights that are attached to a narrow but flexible circuit board. They take only a small amount of power in order to operate, and, depending on the model, can be shortened to your desired length through marked cut lines.
The Govee brand LED Strip lights also have the advantage of being extremely customizable, with an eye-popping 16 million color selection. Controlling the setup of Govee lights is also rather simple, using an app, or using the included IR Remote to adjust it manually.
Using Govee LED Strip lights, you can enhance both your music listening and gaming experience by synching your LED lights to your PC or audio device. There are also seven scene modes preprogrammed in the app to allow you to automatically adjust lighting styles depending on your mood. Feel like watching a movie? The movie scene mode tones the lighting down to allow for a comfortable viewing experience. Having a romantic dinner? The dating scene mode enhances the ambiance to suit the occasion.
The installation of Govee LED Strip Lights is relatively straightforward, as the flexible circuit board easily sticks onto most dry, clean surfaces. The availability of preset animated effects and the wide range of colors make customizing it a breeze. Time schedules can also be set up to have the lights automatically brighten or dim depending on the time of day. These lights are certainly designed for ease of use.
Govee LED Strip Lights also use 5050 LEDs allowing for brighter and more vibrant colors. The superior quality of these models also ensure that your lights last longer and are more reliable.
Pros
Using LED lights rather than traditional lights have the following advantages:
-
Energy Consumption – One of the biggest advantages of using LED lights is efficient energy consumption. Not only do they use lesser power to operate, the power to light conversion is also relatively high.
Normal fluorescent and incandescent lights turn up to 90% of the electricity they use into heat rather than light. LEDs on the other hand convert 95% of the electricity they actually use into light rather than heat. This means an average of 80%-90% improvements in energy efficiency. If you’re looking for a greener lighting solution, then LED strip lights should be on the top of your list. -
Non-Toxic Materials – LED lights don’t use toxic gases to produce light like normal lights. Some lights use mercury vapor in order to function, while LED lights don’t. The non-toxic quality of LED lights makes both operation and disposal very safe.
-
Enhanced Safety – As mentioned, LED lights convert a significant amount of energy to illumination rather than heat. This means that LED lights are less of a fire hazard than most normal lights. As long as your strip lights are properly installed, you’ll be glad to know that they can be operated safely.
-
Longer Operating Lifespan – Govee LED lights were made to be durable and long lasting. The 5050 type LED bulbs are more robust than normal LEDs. Unlike normal lights that burn out completely when they’ve reached the end of their operating life, LEDs will slowly dim, making them still usable though less efficient. The average operating life of normal fluorescent lights can range up to 20,000 hours, while LEDs can last an average of 50,000 hours.
-
Flexibility – One of the most obvious advantages of using LED strip lights is that they’re quite easy to adapt to any room design. They can be bent, their colors adjusted, and be shortened as necessary. This ease of customization makes them a must for those looking for lighting setups that will enhance the ambiance of an area.
Cons
There are also a few downsides to getting LED strip lights:
-
Initial Price Point – LED lights are, admittedly, not the cheapest lighting systems around. In the long run, they will ultimately pay for themselves in terms of energy savings and length of usage, but the initial costs can be intimidating. Although Govee Lights are relatively less expensive than some products in their class, it can still be quite an investment.
-
Temperature and Voltage Sensitivity – Similar to a lot of electronics, LEDs don’t take to wide fluctuations of temperature and voltage. Although normal lights like incandescent bulbs don’t mind temperature changes, LED lights will often perform less efficiently if an area gets too hot.
Voltage spikes will also tend to damage LED lights, though the same can be said for most electronic equipment. If your area experiences power interruptions often, consider investing in surge protectors. -
Individual Replacement – As LED strips entail numerous bulbs connected in a series, if one individual light malfunctions, replacing it won’t be a simple task. Govee RGB LED strips have marked areas that allow users to cut the strip without rendering the rest of the lights inoperable.
Cutting in areas not marked appropriately will render the rest of the strip in between the marks unusable. RGBIC models, however, don’t have cut lines as they’re controlled by an IC chip. They can’t be cut, and doing so may cause the lights to malfunction.
If you wish to replace a single malfunctioning bulb, this usually means removing the entire strip itself. Fortunately, as Govee LED strip lights are made with reliable 5050 LEDs, they’re more robust than normal LED strips. Also, the illumination loss of malfunctioning individual bulbs won’t be noticeable unless the lights themselves are setup to be entirely visible. Govee LED Strip lights are meant to last, if this disadvantage is something to keep in mind.

Average Ratings - other reviews around the web
Other tech review sites, rate Govee LED strip lights highly at 4.6 out of 5 and an 8 out of 10 respectively. Reviewers that tested the product were impressed with the wide color options, along with the robust nature of the lights themselves. However, Tech Radar gave the product a 3.5 out of 5 stars, commenting on the limited Wi-Fi controls, and inability to support 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. But overall, the reviews are positive.
What Are the Different Govee LED Strips?
Govee LED Strip Lights are available in several varieties, and with different lengths. The available models for the lights are as follows:
Govee RGB Strip Lights – Available in 6.56 feet (2 meters), 9.85 feet (3 meters), 16.4 feet (5 meters), 32.8 feet (10 meters), and 65.6 feet (20 meters) varieties, the RGB models have marks where they can be cut and subsequently slotted into connectors. The difference between the RGB and RGBIC models is that the former doesn’t come with an Independent Control Chip. The lack of the control chip allows it to be cut, but it means that the strip can only be one color at a time.
Govee RGBIC Strip Lights – Available in 6.56 feet (2 meters), 9.85 feet (3 meters), 16.4 feet (5 meters), 32.8 feet (10 meters), and 65.6 feet (20 meters). As stated above, the RGBIC model has an Independent Control Chip that allows you to control the individual segments of the LED lights. This means that the LED strip can be different colors at a time, but it does come with the drawback that it can’t be cut. Doing so will either adversely affect performance or cause the lights to stop working completely. RGB Strips can be combined with the use of connectors, and that’s not possible with the RGBIC models.
Govee LED TV Backlights – These strip lights are specifically designed to provide backlighting to flat screen TVs of various sizes. Some models fit 40-inch to 55-inch TVs while others go from 55 inches to 75 inches. Unlike normal LED Strip Lights though, they have a rectangular configuration for easy installation at the back of your television.
Govee LED Car / Motorcycle Strip Lights – These strip lights are specifically designed for use in your vehicle, and are rated as weatherproof. Although other Govee Strip Light models can be used as well, these models in particular were made with automobiles in mind.

Are Govee LED Lights Safe?
As with most LED products, they are relatively safer compared to traditional lighting systems as they radiate less heat than normal bulbs. That said, proper precautions should always be taken whenever you use any type of electronic lighting. Here are a few safety tips to ensure that your Govee LED Lights function safely:
1. Check for Signs of Damage
Before installing your strip lights, check the circuit to make sure that there’s no visible damage before you start installation. Although Govee guarantees that the products you receive have passed quality control out of the factory, damage in transit can still occur. Govee does have a replacement policy concerning damaged products, and it helps if you discover any defects before actual use.
Test the lights before you install them to see if all bulbs are working properly. This will ensure that you avoid any headaches later on.
2. Be Mindful of Your Placement
LED lights are rather sensitive to high temperatures, though the lights themselves don’t emit as much heat as normal light bulbs. Be sure to place them in an area without ambient heat, and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight if possible. Heat will affect the performance of any LED light, often causing them to be blurry or fail to function entirely.
If you wish to use an LED strip to accentuate appliances try to avoid the parts of your equipment that give off heat. Be mindful of your LED strip light placement and you’ll enjoy them for a long time to come.
3. Avoid Non-Stop Use
Keeping your LED lights on 24/7 is bound to damage them in the long run. Although LED lights don’t give off as much heat as normal lights, they still heat up. Leaving your LED lights on indefinitely will shorten their operating lifespan. Make sure to turn off your LEDs every so often to avoid overheating and increased wear and tear.
4. Make Sure You Follow Installation Instructions
Although Govee LED Strip Lights are easy to install, they come with instructions that should be properly followed if you wish to operate them safely. Cutting the strips on the marked locations avoids any potential electrical shorts. Also, keep in mind the proper placement of the connectors and the power outlets when installing the lights.
Are Govee LED Lights Waterproof?
Govee has several LED Strip Light products that can be used either indoors or outdoors depending on the model. Most indoor products aren’t waterproof, though some are rated as daily-life waterproof. This means that accidental soaking and moisture won’t damage the lights. Outdoor models are rated as water resistant or weatherproof, but not entirely waterproof. These products won’t survive being submerged in water, but they will resist it for the most part.
Govee LED Lights that aren’t rated as waterproof still have a water-resistant lining on the circuit, but it’s best to avoid getting it wet.
The Govee Products that are rated as waterproof are the Govee Wi-Fi ColorSense TV LED Backlight H6199, the Govee RBIC LED Strip Light H6117, and the Govee RBIC LED Strip Light H6163. Check your model type before deciding to install your lights in an area that’s prone to moisture.
How Long Do Govee Lights Last?
As Govee LED Strip Lights use 5050 type LED bulbs rather than the usual 3528 LEDs, they’ve been rated at 50,000 operating life hours. That’s about six years, give or take for continuous operation. Of course, frequency of use, and whether or not you let the lights overheat, may increase or decrease the life expectancy of the product. As always, taking care of your equipment can only do your LED Lights Strips a lot of good.
Can You Cut Govee LED Strip Lights?
Only the RGB Govee Strip lights can be cut, as these models are marked with predetermined points where you can cut the strip. Each segment has four pins at the end that can then be slotted to a LED strip connector so you can continue using them in a series.
Govee RGBIC LED Light Strips are different. These don’t have predetermined markings, and cutting them will either cause the lights to dim or stop working. This is because RGBIC LED Light Strip segments use an Independent Control Chip allowing you to mix and match different colors all at once. When choosing which type of Govee lights to get, be sure to keep these differences in mind.
The Govee Mobile App
All Govee LED Strip Lights, regardless of whether they’re Wi-Fi capable or not, can be controlled and adjusted using the mobile app. There’s a single application available for all models, though you’ll choose the type of LED light you have during installation.
The app provides a color chooser which allows you to manually adjust the hue of your lights. This is where the 16 million available colors come in, as you can adjust the color to the exact tint that you want using the detailed color wheel.
The app also gives you several ambiance settings through scenes that adjust the lights according to the mood. For example, the Dating scene gives romantic mood lighting, while Movie scenes adjust lights to fit comfortable viewing. Music mode on the other hand syncs your LED Strip lights to the beat of ongoing audio to create a club-like vibe.
The mobile app can be downloaded from the Govee App page, or from the associated pages for Google Play or the Apple App Store.

How to Install Govee LED Strip Lights
Govee LED Strip Lights installation is quite simple, no matter what model of LED lights you use. Here are the general instructions:
-
Before buying any type of LED Strip, measure the length of the area that you want to install it in. This gives you a better idea of the length of the LED Strip that you need, and whether you’ll need more than one roll.
-
If you’re using Govee RGB Strip Lights then you can cut segments at places appropriately marked as such. You’ll recognize these by the red line and the image of a pair of scissors. Be sure to cut exactly at the line as each side has four pins that can be slotted into connectors.
-
RGB model LED Strip Lights also come with connectors, either straight, L-shaped or T-shaped. To attach a segment to a connector, cut at the appropriate line then peel off the waterproof coating. At the back of each connector are markings that say RGB. These markings match with similar symbols at the end of the segment pins. Slide a segment into the connector matching the proper symbols, then snap the lock in place to secure the wire.
-
RGBIC LED Strips don’t come with cut markers and can’t be cut. Cutting an RGBIC LED Strip Light may affect the light’s performance or cause it to stop working completely.
-
Before securing the LED Strip Lights onto a surface, be sure to test them to see if all the lights are working. You can do so by first plugging in the AC Adapter to an electric outlet, then connecting the plug on the end to the corresponding one on the light controller. Unravel your lights from the spool so they don’t overheat, then connect the end of the lights to the four-pin connector on the end of the controller. Once connected, push the controller’s on button to see if they light up.
-
Both the RGB and RGBIC LED Strips come with an adhesive backing. This allows you to simply stick a strip on a dry, clean surface. Before installing a light strip on an area, be sure to wipe any dirt off the surface. Dust or dirt can cause the adhesive to not stick properly. The box that your lights came in comes with an alcohol prep pad that lets you clean surfaces rather easily. Make sure that the alcohol dries first before sticking the strips in or it will affect the adhesive.
-
Alternatively, both RGB and RGBIC Strip Lights come with adhesive mounting that can be used instead of the backing. These mounts hook onto the strips and can be stuck onto a surface to secure the lights.
How to Connect Govee LED Strip Lights Together
If you’re using the RGB models for Govee Strip Lights, then connecting lights together can be as easy as taking out a pair of scissors. There are two viable methods you can use, if one is obviously easier than the other:
Using Connectors
This is by far the simplest method, and is recommended if you’re using Govee RGB Strip Lights. A Govee LED Light Strip kit gives you several of these in the box. This can be done as follows:
-
Once you’ve measured the appropriate length to use, cut a segment of the LED Strip light on the cutting mark with a pair of scissors.
-
Tear off the waterproof rubber coating to reveal the four pins. Be careful not to remove the adhesive backing instead. Cut off the part you peeled away with your scissors.
-
Choose which connector you want to use, they’re available as a straight connector, an L-shaped connector or a T connector.
-
Align the four pins to the corresponding markings on the connector then slide the wire in so that the pins are covered by the metal inside the connector itself.
-
Lock in the clip of the connector to secure the wire in place.
-
Repeat the process for all the slots in the connector that you’re using.
-
Test the lights by powering it on before installing it on a clean, dry surface. Use the controller and cycle through the lighting modes. If they fail to turn on, try to adjust the pins and connectors. If they all light up, then you’re all set for installation.
Soldering the Pins Together
This is a much harder way to connect two segments of your Strip Lights, and really shouldn’t be attempted unless you know what you’re doing. Improper soldering not only tends to cause malfunctions, but can also short the lights.
To solder two segments of your LED Strip together, you’ll need a holder to clip your wires while you solder, a soldering iron and solder, wire cutters, wire strippers, heat shrink or tape, and some four-cord wiring. Next, follow these steps:
-
As with the previous instructions, cut the segments at the properly marked cutting areas.
-
Peel back the waterproof coating and cut it off.
-
Attach the wire to your holder so that the ends aren’t touching any surface.
-
Heat some solder wire on your soldering iron until a drop settles on the tip, then brush the tip of your soldering iron on top of a pin in order to deposit some solder. Try not to let the soldering iron linger over the pin or you’ll risk burning the connection.
-
Strip the ends of your four-cord wire to expose some of the metal. Make the exposed wire as short as possible. Trim them down if you have to.
-
Place the end of the wires on top of the pin and use the soldering iron to reheat the solder. The wire should adhere to the pin.
-
With the heat shrink or electrical tape, cover the soldered connection.
-
You can now either connect the other end of the cord to another Strip Light Wire to match the RGB markings, or connect it to a power source. Can You Connect Govee LED Lights Together and Extend Them?
Although the RGB LED Strip lights allow you to connect segments together, connecting an extra strip to the existing segment isn’t advised. Although the adapter may still power the extra strip, power loss would be expected, and will cause the extra strip to be dimmer, or fail to work altogether. Extra light strips should have their own power outlet in order for them to work properly.

The Govee LED Light Strip, whether RGB or the RGBIC, has microphones set in the controller that detects sound and will synch to any music or voice that it picks up.
